The Bonded Warehouse, a social and retail centre in the heart of Cork City
My BSc Hons 4th year project focused on regenerating an old industrial building, the Bonded Warehouse, located on Lapps Quay opposite to Navigation Square and Horgan’s quay. This prime location is promised to be developped in the future years and it is at the junction of several routes.
The aim in this project was to create a high end retail centre on the first two floors, promoting Irish designs in the memory of the Port of Cork and its international trading history. The different units are hosted in the existing warehouses, with a strong character. The design aims at enhancing the building’s presence and not recover it.
The second floor got its ceiling raised to provide for a large coworking space and an auditorium to help support local, small companies and provide a space for conferences.
The social areas where developed in particular, with a care for detail and attention to the history of the building as well as its location in the city and on the river Lee, with a strong external park created as well.
